WLC Fundraiser Thank You!

We made a lot of new friends and raised funds to help us continue quality animal care during the lean winter months. A special thank you to our awesome Honorary Committee, Board of Directors, Management, Staff, Interns, Volunteers and Silent Auction donors. We had the best crew ever for this special event and are so grateful for each and every one of you. A final thank you to our donors who determine the quality of care for the animals and the quality of the human experience at Wildlife Learning Center.

With much Gratitude,

Cofounders Paul & David

WLC Fundraiser

Thank you to all of the friends of WLC who came out to support the animals.
2014 was our most successful fundraiser yet!
The funds we raised will help acquire life-saving equipment for an onsite veterinary suite.

Zeus - The Screech OwlZeus was given a home at Wildlife Learning Center in the summer of 2012.  Prior to living at WLC, Zeus was treated at a wildlife rehabilitation facility after he was found emaciated and blind on someone’s front porch in Central California.  Veterinarians nursed him back to health, but deemed him “non-releasable” due to his loss of vision, preventing him from hunting and surviving on his own in the wild.  It’s believed that he only has about 10% of his vision.

Specifically, Zeus was diagnosed with conjunctivitis, corneal degeneration, endotheliopathy, anterior uveitis, most likely caused by a traumatic event like flying into something or being attacked by a predator.  His general condition is a capsular cataract and the white flecks that glisten in his eyes are the result of fibrin and blood pigment clots. These pigments cause a unique appearance that some have described as a “view of the Universe” quality in his eyes, for which he is now well known for.  Zeus’s condition does not cause him pain and he’s otherwise completely healthy.  Zeus has regular ophthalmology exams with his next check up coming this Thursday, November 20, 2014.

Zeus exudes a peaceful presence and is extremely calm.  Despite his small size, Zeus has a big personality and exhibits a curious nature.  In their combined 40 plus years of working with wildlife, WLC Cofounders, Paul Hahn and David Riherd, say they have never seen anything like this unique “starry” appearance in an animals’ eyes.

Zeus enjoys perching either in his hollowed tree trunk or on top of it above Cofounder Paul’s desk.  He is so camouflaged most people don’t notice him until we point him out.  Other people sometimes notice him but think he’s a stuffed animal because he is so calm and peaceful.   Being nocturnal, Zeus sleeps during the day and awakes at night.   When people see Zeus open his eyes, they usually respond with great surprise.  We have seen people just about taken to tears when meeting this most special little owl.

People who see him for the first time say it almost looks like a celestial constellations in his eyes.  It’s remarkable that Zeus’ disability brings so much awareness, sensitivity, and concern, for not just screech owls, but all types of wildlife, as well as the environment we share.  Zeus is truly an ambassador for wildlife.

The staff at WLC receives the joy of being with Zeus everyday and believes it’s not just a responsibility to care for him, but also a privilege.

Zeus is hand fed everyday by WLC biologists.  His normal diet consists of one mouse and 8 mealworms.   Zeus receives the best possible medical attention and care possible and will have a lifetime home here at Wildlife Learning Center.

When you visit Wildlife Learning Center you can see Zeus from our gift shop.

If you would like to help care for Zeus or any of the displaced animals at WLC, you can donate through PayPal, call our office at 818-362-8711 or visit our GoFundMe online campaign at http://www.gofundme.com/cpvfd8

Western screech owls are found from Canada, the continental United States and Central America, in temperate forests, montane forests, scrublands, deserts, and suburban areas. They have a variety of vocalizations including short whistles, barking calls, and they sometimes make a calm purr-like sound.   Western screech owls primarily prey on insects, rodents, and small birds.
